Class Synopsis

This 6-hour class will assist parents in learning how to constructively discipline the children in their care, helping the children to learn and grow from disciplinary encounters.  Participants will learn strategies to prevent arguments and counter opposition, no matter the age of the child.  The relationship between discipline and learning will be emphasized.

A 3-hour version of the class is available, eliminating the afternoon workshop.

Creating a behavior plan (individualized to each family)

 

Methodologies

Although the morning will be primarily lecture and guided discussion with a bit of role-play, the afternoon will be entirely workshop-oriented with each participant / couple developing a behavior plan tailored to their individual situation.

 

Learning objectives

At the end of this course, each participant will be able to:

  • Explain the difference between discipline and punishment
  • Identify their own parenting styles
  • Model expected behaviors
  • Tell how empathy and personal responsibility are important in discipline
  • Use active thinking, token economies, feedback, and remediation to reduce oppositional behavior and arguments
  • Pre-plan responses to the disciplinary issues in their own households
  • Develop a behavior plan for their children

 

Application to Child Welfare

This class will enable parents to use positive discipline techniques to help their children learn and grow into responsible, mature citizens.  Using the techniques advocated by Multi-Systemic Therapy, foster parents will teach their children how to cope in the chaotic world they will likely find upon leaving the home.
