Giving Back the Night:  Sexual Violence as a Young Men's Issue

Class Synopsis

This 3-hour class will assist foster and kinship caregivers to educate the teenage boys in their homes on sexual violence and assault.  This class focuses not on the sexual abuse that may have occurred in the child's bio home, but on sexual assault that may occur on dates and in the community at large.  Parents are encouraged to bring their sons (aged 14 and above) to the training to learn about rape prevention.

Learning objectives

At the end of this course, each participant will be able to:

  • Define rape and sexual assault
  • Identify common myths about rape
  • List the elements of rape
  • Describe the various types of rapes and rapists
  • Explain what drives men to rape
  • Identify strategies men can use to prevent sexual violence
  • Assist a rape survivor to receive help and navigate the legal process
  • Teach prevention strategies to their children

 

Application to Child Welfare

This course will enable foster parents to communicate about rape and sexual assault with their teenaged sons and provide preventive strategies.
