Class Synopsis
This 3-hour class will assist parents in learning about defense mechanisms: how and why they are formed, who uses them, and how they affect relationships. Participants will leave the class with strategies to help them see past the defense mechanisms their children may be using, to be able to see the wonderful children underneath. In addition, parents will learn how to help their children use more healthy/mature defense mechanisms.
***THIS CLASS WILL INCLUDE A FINGER-PAINTING ACTIVITY.***

At the end of this course, each participant will be able to:
Application to Child Welfare
This class will enable parents to see beyond some of the defense mechanisms troubled children are likely to use to see the beauty of the child underneath. Using strategies provided in this class, caregivers will be empowered to assist children in developing healthier, more mature defenses. The end result is projected to be that fewer placements will disrupt as parents are more likely to anticipate and deal with the behaviors indicative of immature / pathologic defense mechanisms.
